When I first heard about the Battlestar Galactica boardgame, earlier this year, I was interested in the game but not really dying to buy a copy. Sure, the Shadows Over Camelot-like approach to the game sounded fun, and the theme interested me, but I wasn’t so excited that I kept a close eye on.

An battlestar galactica the board game review cooperative board game with traitors.
There have been many attempts, but nothing comes close to what delivers.
There are plenty of Monopoly, Clue, and Risk board game variations available that tout titles such as, and to name a few.
But they simply slap on some familiar names and photos and call it a game.
Same game, just different images.
Branching out into new board game territory with a popular media brand is a trickier proposition.
Battlestar Galactica delivers a complete new game experience that wonderfully matches the character and feeling of the TV series.
And there will be traitors.
Just ask our boys.
Defend the fleet from Cylon raiders.
In the first 6 minutes of the video review, I cover an overview of the game, our impressions, and share my rating.
After that, I dive into the details of how to play the game.
What is Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game all about?
Players choose from an array of characters with unique abilities.
In Battlestar Galactica players take on the roles of characters aboard Galactica who are searching for a new planet for humans to call home.
Because the Cylons machines first created by humans have destroyed their home planet.
Except that not everyone aboard is human… Who will the Cylons be?
Some are actually Cylons in disguise.
Because Cylons have learned how to appear human.
If the humans can get to their destination, they win.
But if any of the resources food, fuel, morale, population are depleted, Galactica is damaged too much, or the Cylon boarding party of Centurion guards get too far aboard, then the humans will lose.
Move to different locations to activate different actions.
So not only do the players need to battle Cylon ships and avert crises to survive, but while doing all that they also have to detect the hidden Cylons and lock them up to reduce the harm they can do.
And we love it!
There are battlestar galactica the board game review here board games with a traitor in the midst — for instance.
Players will face many crises along the way.
But in Battlestar Galactica, that may not be the case.
You may be fighting FOR the humans during the first half of the game and AGAINST them in the second half.
But once battlestar galactica the board game review fleet gets halfway to its destination, an additional amount of loyalty cards are handed out.
Once again players will see if they are human or Cylon.
Why does this matter?
Because Cylons can remain hidden and thwart progress.
Knowing who collects which types of Skills cards can help detect the Cylons in the group.
Many of the crises in the game require a Skills Check to pass.
All player may contribute cards into every Skills Check.
These are done secretly.
If players suspect a Cylon, they can vote to throw them in the Brig — where their ability to contribute to Skills Checks will be diminished.
Having a 2nd loyalty check means that as the game gets closer to the battlestar galactica the board game review, the tension and suspicion will ramp up as well — building to a great crescendo.
Throwing players in please click for source Brig while Cylons ships are surrounding Galactica destroying civilian ships is a hairy situation.
And a lot of fun.
Revealed Cylons can work to deplete the resources even faster.
Of course, Cylon players can also Reveal themselves.
Because revealed Cylons then get new locations they can visit to cause other actions to occur — none of which will be good for the remaining humans.
And all of this is so well developed in the game that the players get totally immersed and time flies by.
Can the whole family enjoy Battlestar Galactica?
Not everyone in the family will enjoy Battlestar Galactica.
The Please click for source gets additional, special cards and the Admiral gets nukes.
There are plenty of girls https://filmman.ru/board-game/paydirt-board-game.html ladies that enjoy the game as well.
But Caleb has joined in our endeavors since he was 8 and he loves it as well.
Getting familiar with the rules Battlestar Galactica is a game where we always have the rules handy.
Can the humans make it all the way to Kobol?
The good news is that there are some summary sheet player aids online that really help.
The rules summary sheets we use come from.
Likewise, their summary sheets for Battlestar Galactica are terrific.
And then there were expansions… Like so many other great board games, Battlestar Galactica has also spawned game expansions.
Bring on the expansions!
Sure it would be great if we could talk mom and Brooke into playing so we battlestar galactica the board game review have 6.
So instead, we look for long weekends where we can set aside the time and invite some friends to join us in the fun.
Speaking of which, when are we going to play again?

When I first heard about theearlier this year, I was interested in the game but not really dying to buy a copy.
And when presented with an opportunity to buy the game at GenCon, I let it slip through my fingers unlikewhich I immediately snagged.
At PAX, as soon as I saw Fantasy Flight only had a few copies remaining, I grabbed them both, fully intending to buy the last two copies.
To escape before the Cylons manage to reduce one of four resources to zero.
Unfortunately for the players, one or more of their number may secretly be Cylons working to counteract their actions.
My experience with the Battlestar Galactica series is limited to watching the first eight or nine episodes of the series.
The game is that much fun.
What makes it fun?
As exciting as cooperative games are, the interaction at the table becomes a lot more interesting in games in which there are one or more secret traitors hidden amongst the group of players.
The fact that the game is difficult for the players to win without hidden Cylons just makes the accusations stronger, more frequent, and louder Will screaming at me after I called him Cylon about three thousand times was pretty funny; especially since I was the Cylon.
Whereas in Shadows Over Camelot an accidental move by a player will result in some mild teasing, an accidental move in Battlestar Galactica is always followed by a few minutes of harsh, brutal accusations and name calling.
With a game that can last up to three or more!
Shadlyn and Fox joined us last night and this was their first time playing the game.
After a couple of rounds both of them were blowing through turns in two or three minutes.
I hope Fantasy Flight Games takes a close look at the player turns in this game and works to keep fast turns in future games.
Before your first play, I recommend that one of the players read this box aloud to the group.
Your game will be more fun if everyone has a clear idea of what is and is not allowed before the game starts.
And encouraging the players to accuse each other of being Cylons is worth the effort, since that can only lead to a more enjoyable experience.
Components Like many Fantasy Flight products, the game is packed — in one of their standard approximately one-foot by one-foot boxes — with several high-quality components.
Inside the box you will find: Gameboard.
This quad-fold board expands out to almost two-foot square and depicts the Galactica and space around it, Colonial One, Cylon locations, spaces for different card decks and human ship reserves, and tracking devices for the four human resources.
The board requires a little assembly before the first game — the resources use dials to track their current values — but this only takes a few moments of your time and once completed is ready for all future games.
The board appeared fairly sturdy at first, but is already starting to split on one fold.
Character Sheets and Stands.
Ten total, one for each character.
Some characters are pilots, and also have a small disc that is placed under a ship when they are piloting.
The cards are attractive, though there was a misprint on one.
There are a lot of pieces used to represent damage, civilian ships and Cylon basestars, nukes, and other assorted bits that will be needed during the game.
These are all linen-finish bits and I have no complaints with the quality.
Four different ship designs — Vipers, Raptors, Cylon Raiders, and Heavy Raiders — and a total of 32 ships.
A mix of small cards and large cards, divided into six different decks plus a few one-off cards.
The card decks are: Skill Cards five different typesDestination Cards used when the players manage to jump the shipQuorum Cards political cardsCrisis and Super Crisis Cards these are very bad for the humansand Loyalty Cards are you a Cylon?
These are the same physical quality as cards found in most Fantasy Flight products.
This means, these are nice cards.
Yes, the game uses one d8.
Gameplay, Setup and Player Turns Before the game starts, the four resource dials are set the rulebook includes a default setting and recommended settings to make the game easier or harder for the human players and each player selects a character and places his stand in the starting location specified on the character sheet.
Loyalty cards are then dealt to the players face-down, and kept secretand one player is selected to take the first turn.
Players take the following steps on a turn: Skills.
At the start of each turn, players draw a number and type of Skill Cards depending on the information on their character sheet.
The five skills and thus, five Skill Card types are: Leadership GreenTactics PurplePiloting RedPolitics Yellowand Engineering Blue.
A character can move to another location on the board where they then act.
Players can perform actions depending on where they are on the board, special abilities offered by their character sheets, or actions on Skill Cards.
While each player may take only one action each turn, some actions activate other actions sometimes for other players.
Many Crisis Cards require a player to choose one of several actions all bad while others just occur — Cylon ship placement — and still others require the humans to succeed at a Skill Check, see below, or else suffer some terrible consequences.
Cylon Raiders are the real nasty bits, since there can be so many of them on the board at a time, as they move from space zone to space zone destroying Vipers and civilian ships.
Fortunately, one of the locations on the Galactica gives players an opportunity to communicate with — check out the reverse side of — a civilian ship before it is attacked.
This can be very useful, and sometimes spell the difference between loss now or loss latersince it helps the human players determine where to spend their actions should I launch Vipers this turn or deal with the Centurions that are boarding us?
Not always, though the players will start to wish they could jump on each turn.
Also on some Crisis Cards is a jump icon, which advances the fleet token on the jump track.
Once the token reaches the end of the track, the Galactica jumps and the human players move just a little closer to winning the game.
Jumping and Destination Cards On the gameboard is a jump track which advances, as Crisis Cards are played, through six stages.
The battlestar galactica the board game review three stages are just time keepers — the token moves a step — while the last three are when the players can interact with the jump track.
When the Galactica jumps, the Admiral player takes the top two Destination Cards and secretly chooses one to play.
This is one more way in which the game helps build the tension during the session.
Gameplay, Skill Checks Throughout the game, whenever a player attempts an action on some of the board spaces, or during the resolution of most Crisis Cards, the players will enter into Skill Checks.
Whenever a Skill Check battlestar galactica the board game review attempted, two random cards best board games android tablet drawn from the Destiny Deck — a small deck of 10 cards created from two of each of the Skill Card types — and placed face-down.
In turn, clockwise from the active player, each player may then add zero to his entire hand of cards to the check; again, all cards are placed face-down.
The active player is the last to add cards to the check and then shuffles the cards and resolves the check.
A check is always a target number — anywhere from 6 to 24 — that must be reached with a specific set of cards.
Any cards not of the designated types count negative toward the value.
The values printed on any Yellow, Purple, or Blue Skill Cards played on this check are added together and then the values on any Green or Red cards played on this check are subtracted from the sum of Yellow, Purple, and Blue.
If the total, after the negative card values are subtracted, is equal to 11 or higher then the humans increase the Jump track by 1.
If the total is 10 or less, then bad things happen.
Skill Checks are a great way to watch for Cylons.
There are a lot of Skill Checks during the game, so players need to keep a close eye on their Skill Cards.
Play too few, and you may be accused of being a Cylon.
As a Cylon, a player may take the following actions: Skills.
A Cylon player no longer draws the skills on his Character Sheet but, instead, draws any two Skill Cards each turn.
There are four gameboard locations specifically for Cylon players.
Cylon actions are limited to those on the four Cylon spaces.
Unfortunately for the humans, all of these can have nasty consequences.
Endgame As the humans' resources slowly drop, the group can start to feel the game coming to a close.
When I looked at my hand, and saw what I was holding, I knew battlestar galactica the board game review were doomed.
If I had listened to Shadlyn and directed some of my attention to Fox we would have caught him and thrown him in the Brig; the battlestar galactica the board game review he caused before he was revealed is a lot of what led to the human loss.
Do anything in your power to sway the other players, to get them to start thinking like you do.
And, once everyone agrees with you, toss that unfortunate player right into the Brig.
Once there, he can inflict less damage to your cause and keep the accusations away check this out you.
Other Opinions This is by no means the only review of that you can read online.
Several others exist, including one by Scott H.
Bistro at Fortress Ameritrash.
An idiot Cylon player can make things too easy for the humans, either by not doing enough, or by being revealed too quickly.
The board — and Crisis Cards — are nasty, and having the right mix of Skill Cards, at the right time, can sometimes decide whether or not the humans win or lose.
In the same review, Mr.
I was having so much fun playing the game that I wanted to share; I haven't written a game review in a few years.
After reading this review, I think I need to add this game to my wish list.
I'm happy to help!
I was on the fence, but now I must have this.
I hope you enjoy it.
Make sure your group can handle lying and cruel words, though, because this game brings out the worst in us.
If you were in Austin, you could play next weekend!
It sounds like I've got enough interested people that we'll be playing again next weekend.
As it is, you've got to wait and play in the future!
It was cruel of FFG to sell limited copies at Gencon.
Even though I went I didn't get there soon enough to get one.
If I had paid the extortionists on eBay right away I could have justified it.
Was Gencon and Pax the only way to get it?
Is there really only 230 200 at gencon and 30 at Pax is what I heard copies of it out there?
With so much being written about it, that doesn't seem likely.
I'm not falling for the pre-order.
I'm going with whoever gets it mouse trap board game original stock first.
I had my copy of agricola a week before half the people that had pre-ordered at at less than what they payed.

And it's not all that odd that the game is getting so much buzz even though there are only 250 copies out there.
Most of the people who snagged a copy of the game are hardcore gamers, people who spend their time posting at sites like this and writing about games.
A great review and gives insight on how to play my first game.
Now all I need is someone to bring the game to our FLGS and play on.
Thanks for the details.

But that isn't a pre-order from FFG, it's a pre-order at Amazon.
Can't comment on how quickly it will get to you, but there is also free shipping with it.
I have one of the GenCon games and it's the middle of my first turn in a play-by-email game we're doing.

This is a great review.

This is a great review.
I think this is a sign I should buy this game.
It's well worth the price.
Great review, but it makes the wait for this one so much harder!
Just another month or two to wait.
Of course, since I own a copy, I'll be playing again Friday night.
It looks like we have six people lined up for a session.
I think, not officially.
But it's sand board game online classes on conventions and Essen SPIEL, so battlestar galactica the board game review lucky people among whom I'm included have it already.

Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock is a massive treat for fans of the franchise, but even if this is your first exposure to the universe, it’s well worth your money. It’s a sufficiently deep, extremely fun and good looking turn based space strategy game with fantastic combat and a content-rich campaign.

We review the Battlestar Galactica board game.
Based on the hit Sci-Fi tv show, the BSG board game completely captures the essence of its source material into a fantastic tabletop experience.
If you decide to play the board game, you will feel one or all of these emotions.
Based on the TV show Battlestar Galactica the more recent one with the female Starbuckthe board game takes you on a ride through space as the human players try to outrun those sneaky Cylons.
Throughout the game, the human players will do their best to keep their head above water as the secret Cylon player s do everything they can to sabotage their efforts.
The stellar Fantasy Flight Games published this game, giving me hope for it.
FFG is known to make a learn more here product.
Does BSG fall into licensed board game with trap or is it worthy of standing on its own robotic legs?
Battlestar Galactica is a deduction and survival game for 3-6 players that plays in about 2-3 hours, playing best with 5 players.
Game Overview: Your secret loyalty card will determine which side you will play for during the game.
At the beginning of the game, each player will be dealt a hidden loyalty card.
During the game, the human players must try and keep Galactica intact while they deal with attacks from enemy ships, supply shortages, and other crises that pop up.
The majority of the game will take place via a simple skill check mechanic.
Players will add cards to a skill check to help or hinder its progress.
If the humans can manage to jump Galactica enough times to reach the planet Kobol, they will have staved off defeat and the Cylon players must hang their heads in shame.
Game Components: Fantasy Flight Games is no stranger to making games that people want to buy and play.
In BSG, you get a box full to the brim with great pieces.
First, there is a large game board illustrated with a picture of Galactica that will serve as the main focus for the game.
The board also has a spot for Colonial One for the the president to lead from and various Cylon locations that will get used later in the game.
Finally, the board has four wheels to track player resources food, fuel, population, morale during the game.
These wheels will help determine the fate of the players in the game.
To attack and defend Galactica, the game comes with a number of great looking plastic miniatures.
Cylon Raiders regular and heavyVipers, and Raptors are all included in great detail.
In thewe also get plastic Basestar battlestar galactica the board game review to use.
But for now, we have to settle for a cardboard token version.
The game also comes with a ton of cards.
You get over 12 different types of cards to be used during the game.
All are well illustrated with artwork and quotes from the TV show.
Finally there are a click of different cardboard tokens to be used for various purposes during the game.
Once again, Fantasy Flight Games hits a home run with their game components.
How To Play: Crisis cards are where the real tensions and interaction happen during the game.
And they are all bad for the humans.
To start the game, each player chooses a character from the show.
In the base game, there are 10 options to see more from with more added in the expansions.
Characters must be chosen from various categories in order to maintain a balanced game Pilot, Support, Military Leader, Political Leader.
Each player will have a special ability, a one-time use ability and a weakness.
All feel quite balanced, but everyone will have their favorites.
Next, loyalty cards are dealt.
Each player secretly looks at their card and finds out if they are a human or Cylon.
Once you are ready to play, each player will take their turn in a clockwise manner.
Each turn has 4 basic steps: 1.
Draw Skill Cards — Players receive just click for source number of different skill cards politics, tactics, piloting, etc.
Move — Players can move their figure to a different locations on Galactica.
Each location does something different from firing the guns to drawing cards to launching yourself into a viper battlestar galactica the board game review you are pilot.
Action — A player gets 1 action on their turn.
This will either be activating the space on Galactica that they occupy, playing a card from their hand, or using a special ability.
Crisis — At the end of their turn, a player draws a crisis card from the crisis deck.
This is where the meat of the game happens.
All crisis cards are bad for the humans; the only question is how bad.
Most have a pass or fail option.
The majority will involve skill checks.
How do skill checks work?
Skill checks all have a target number.
To hit that number, players play skill cards from their hand into a face down pile.
The key with skill checks is only certain type of cards can help.
Any color card added to a check from outside one of the designated categories will act as a negative.
click here the human players will be jumping Galactica to new planets.
These involve the Admiral drawing two cards from the location deck and picking one of the two bad choices.
Each planet has a distance marker on the card.
This represents how far the humans have traveled.
You were actually a Cylon sleeper agent.
Now, everyone knows it.
At some point, a hidden Cylon player will reveal themselves as the toaster they are.
Once revealed, they have a whole slew of new actions they can do on their turn from attacking Galactica with the Cylon fleet to playing a Super Crisis card.
The humans must keep jumping Galactica until they reach a distance of 8.
After that, one more jump to Kobol and they win.
The Cylons must either destroy Galactica or drain one of their four resources to zero to win.
Each player has a character token to track their movements around the ship.
And the Cylon ships will be constantly hassling poor Galactica.
BSG is almost a love letter to the TV show.
So many games claim to immerse players deep in theme, but BSG probably stands at the top of that pile.
I can tell from the fantastic game play that the designer must have been a huge fan of the show.
You want the Battlestar Galactica experience?
Well here it is.
These 4 dials track the resources of the human players.
In fact, I know players that have never even seen one episode of the TV show that still love playing BSG.
That right there shows you what kind of game Battlestar Galactica is.
Any board game fan and appreciate these things.
Any player can jump right in and compete.
If you are a fan of the show, then it will make playing the game all that much better.
Being able to choose your favorite character and taking on his strengths and weaknesses is a ton of fun.
Yes, the game play is also really well done.
Despite the overly long and sometimes confusing rulebook a staple of Fantasy Flight Games it feels likeBSG is actually not that hard to learn.
The skill check mechanics is probably the hardest thing to remember, but that should only take a few turns before it all clicks.
The skill checks are a great aspect of the game.
You never know if a Cylon will help screw up that really important challenge.
Too add on to that, while the players are busy trying to keep Galactica flying, there is a whole meta-game going on.
On one hand, you are moving around the ships, fending off attacking enemies and trying to keep Galactica in one piece.
Within the first turn or two, accusations will start flying.
And rooting out those evil Cylons can be frakking hard.
Were those two red cards in the skill check from Starbuck or were they from the destiny deck?
Did the admiral choose a planet that wasted 3 fuel because the other card was much worse or is he secretly tying to sabotage you?
These questions will all run through your head during the game.
Accusations will be flying faster than the Vipers.
Eventually, enough will be enough and casual accusations will turn into a nasty witch hunt.
These kind of accusations are battlestar galactica the board game review make BSG so much fun to play.
You have a game with a ton of player interaction and some solid deception to round it out.
Each player gets a character card with a special ability, one-time use ability, and a weakness.
My biggest gripe is the player count.
BSG plays optimal at 5 players.
At 4 or 6 players, you get a sympathizer loyalty card.
It basically assigns a loyalty card halfway through the game based on how well the humans are doing.
At 3, the minimum amount of players needed, there is only 1 Cylon.
Once players figure out who the Cylon is, all the tension of the game evaporates.
With 5 players, there will always be 2 Cylons.
So even after one reveals himself, the humans still need to root out the other saboteur.
Finally, BSG is not a short game.
Expect to play for at least 2 hours longer if you are all learning the rules.
Up font, that seems like quite the time commitment.
However, people might see that playtime and be hesitant to make that kind of commitment.
So while not perfect, Battlestar Galactica does involve a lot of constant action, deep player interaction and a solid metagame that will keep you coming back for more and more.
Even when I lose at BSG, I still walk away knowing I had a ton of fun.
Final Thoughts: If you are a fan of the show, then you will have a ton of fun playing with the minis that come with the game.
I have played over a dozen games of and I still love it just as much as when I destroyed my first Cylon raider.
The giant pile of crisis cards and the random draw from the loyalty click to see more gives the game an incredible amount of replay value.
And this is just with the base game.
Add in the fact that there are already three expansions out each of which adds different elements to your gameBSG is sure to hit your table top over and over again.
While it remains true to the source material and is closely tied in with its theme, newcomers will be at no disadvantage to TV show fans.
But if you are a fan of the show, then this game needs to be in your library.
You will love it.
If a game about sabotage, deception, deduction, and the fight for survival sounds interesting to you, then grab a copy of today.
Fantastic, thematic game play make this a must own.
He also goonies the board a bit of a component addict.
Only a frakking Cylon would write a review like that!
I really like the Pegasus expansion, but not New Caprica.

It’s been over eight years since BattleStar Galactica ended in almost the worst way imaginable, and in that time we haven’t got a single good (official) game based on the series. We now have one.

How great would it be, I always thought, to play a game that would encompass these titanic clashes of chrome and steel… And then Battlestar Galactica Deadlock happened. There have been other past attempts, of course, but the history of official BSG games is one of a largely under-utilised IP; Couple of gems, perhaps, but

FFG is known to make a quality product.
Does BSG fall into licensed game trap or is it worthy of standing on its own robotic legs?
Battlestar Galactica is a deduction and survival game for 3-6 players that plays in about 2-3 hours, playing best with 5 players.
Game Overview: Your secret loyalty card will determine which side you will play for during the game.
At the beginning of the game, each player will be dealt a hidden loyalty card.
During the game, the human players source try and keep Galactica intact while they deal with attacks from enemy ships, supply shortages, and other crises that pop up.
The majority of the game will take place via a simple skill check mechanic.
source will add cards to a skill check to help or hinder its progress.
In thewe battlestar galactica the board game review get plastic Basestar miniatures to battlestar galactica the board game review />But for now, we have to settle for a cardboard token version.
The game also comes with a ton of cards.
You get over 12 different types of cards to be used during the game.
All are well illustrated with artwork and quotes from the TV show.
Finally there are a pile of different cardboard tokens to be used for various purposes during the game.
Once again, Fantasy Flight Games hits a home run with their game here />How To Play: Crisis cards are where the real tensions and interaction happen during the game.
And they are all bad for the humans.
To start the game, each player chooses a character from the show.
In the base game, there are 10 options to choose from with more added in the expansions.
Each https://filmman.ru/board-game/orchid-board-games.html secretly looks at their card and finds out if they are a human or Cylon.
Once you are ready to play, each player will take their turn in a clockwise manner.
Each turn has 4 basic steps: 1.
Draw Skill Cards — Players receive a number of different skill cards politics, tactics, piloting, etc.
Move — Players can move their figure to a different locations on Galactica.
Each location does something different from firing the guns to drawing cards to launching yourself into a viper if you are pilot.
Eventually the human players will be jumping Galactica to new planets.
These involve the Admiral drawing two cards from the location deck and picking one of the two bad choices.
Each planet has a distance marker on the card.
This represents how far the humans have traveled.
You were actually a Cylon sleeper agent.
At this point in the game, there is definitely 1 or 2 Cylons working against the board game battle wizards />Now, everyone knows it.
Too add on to that, while the players are battlestar galactica the board game review trying to keep Galactica flying, there is a whole meta-game going on.
These kind of accusations are what make BSG so much fun to play.
